Karlie Kloss is an American model and 12-times Vogue cover girl. Since being discovered in 2005, at the age of just 13, Kloss's meteoric rise to success has seen her become a household name.
With a grounding in classical ballet, Kloss is famed for her mesmerising stage presence and unparalleled walk. "She moves like a cat. I love the way she walks. For me, it's more important than beauty," Carolina Herrera said in 2011. This poise translates to film as well. John Galliano has referred to her as a chameleon: "On set she smolders. She becomes this other creature in front of the lens."
Kloss is just as well known for her charming and down-to-earth personality - and for her home baked cookies, which she often brings to share at photo shoots or fittings. Her charm has bolstered her success and caused many designers, including Alexander Wang, to sing her praises: "At the end of the day, even if you're the most beautiful girl in the world, if you make everyone's life miserable, you won't get far. Karlie is a rare balance of beauty and personality."
As one of the most sought after catwalk models, the face of some of the biggest design houses in the world, a Victoria's Secret Angel, and following in Elle Macpherson's wake by recently being dubbed "the body", Kloss is a modern supermodel.
    Karlie Elizabeth Kloss was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 3rd, 1992. Her family - her father - an emergency room doctor - mother, an artist, and three sisters - relocated to suburban town of St Louis, Missouri in 1995.
    Kloss began studying classical ballet at Caston's Ballet Academy in 2002. After taking a break to focus on sport, the movie Center Stage inspired her to dance again, though she was too tall to take it up professionally. "The academy could not find anyone to dance next to me. Minor detail!" she told British Vogue in May 2012. But the training helped her succeed as a model: "My ballet training was honestly the most valuable thing I could have done to prepare myself for this career... [modelling] is about movement, about rhythm, about your body and your muscles. Ballet really taught me so much about the power of movement."
    Kloss was discovered at the age of 13 by model scouts Jeff and Mary Clarke when she walked in a St Louis charity fashion runway show in 2005. "She was a baby. But she had that walk. We didn't want to change a thing," Mary later said about the discovery.
    In 2007 she was signed by Elite Model Management.
    She made her catwalk debut in August 2007 for the spring/summer 2008 season walking exclusively for Calvin Klein in New York. "She was being compared to a young Kate Moss," Kloss' father told the Wall Street Journal in 2011. She also walked for Alexander McQueen, Sonia Rykiel and Valentino in Paris, and appeared as an exclusive for Gucci in Milan that season.
    In January 2008 she moved to Next Model Management. Her former agency, Elite, filed a lawsuit against Next over the move claiming they had offered Kloss "improper compensation". The case was settled out of court.
    In February 2008 Kloss landed her first Vogue cover for Teen Vogue. She was photographed by Patrick Demarchelier alongside Chanel Iman and Ali Michael.
    She has now appeared on 12 Vogue covers including British Vogue's September 2012 issue; Australian Vogue's March 2012 issue, Korean Vogue's March 2012 and December 2009 issues; Italian Vogue's December 2011, January 2010, and October 2009 issues; German Vogue's December 2011 issue; Chinese Vogue's August 2010 issue; Teen Vogue's May 2010 and February 2008 issues; and Vogue Portugal's September 2009 issue.
    Kloss was chosen as the face of Bvlgari's Omnia Jade fragrance and appeared in the Dolce & Gabbana campaign for autumn/winter 2008-2009.
    She was featured as one of fashion's favourite faces in the September 2009 issue of US Vogue. "She's an amazing model," photographer Steven Meisel said in the article. "She knows clothes. She has tons of energy. She will add things to the shoot that I would never have thought of." Photographer Arthur Elgort also described her as "like a young Christy Turlington".
    In 2009 Kloss became the face of Marc Jacobs Lola for the fragrance's launch campaign. She also appeared in campaigns for Pringle of Scotland, Sportmax, Lacoste and Dolce & Gabbana.
    For spring/summer 2010 Kloss was chosen as the face of campaigns for Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Hermes and Yves Saint Laurent beauty. The following season, autumn/winter 2010-11, she also became the face of Aquascutum.
    Kloss was featured as a star model by Mario Testino in British Vogue's December 2010 issue. She appeared alongside Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell in a shoot toasting the supermodels of the decade.
    After graduating from high school in May 2011, Kloss attended her prom with a childhood friend in a tangerine Dior gown.
    In November 2011 she made her Victoria's Secret debut alongside legendary Angels Alessandra Ambrosio, Candice Swanepool, Adriana Lima, and Lily Aldridge.
    Kloss appeared in a nearly-nude shoot for Italian Vogue's December 2011 issue. The shoot became the subject of controversy after editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani removed one of the images from Vogue.it amidst criticism that Kloss looked too thin. Sozzani later defended Kloss, pointing out her muscular physique, and said she only removed the photo because she felt people too easily attach labels without thinking.
    For spring/summer 2012, she appeared as the face of campaigns for Oscar de la Renta, Elie Saab and Donna Karan's pre collection.
